WHSmith has said its high street arm has been “adversely impacted” after its online greetings card business Funky Pigeon was victim to a cyber security incident back in April, denting sales.
Despite this, the stationery chain said its high street business was performing in line with expectationsm with sales at 80% of 2019 revenue for the 26 weeks to 27 August 2022.
Orders from WHSmith’s subsidiary were suspended after the cyber attack although it assured shoppers that customer payment data, including bank account or credit card details, had not been placed at risk.

Total group revenue rested at 112% of 2019 levels for the same 26-week period.
The retailer said its high street business “is performing in line with expectations” and in the arm, it will continue to focus on cost efficiencies and the return on space.
“We have identified further significant cost saving opportunities, most notably through reductions in rent,” the company said in a statement.
WHSmith said it now expects the outcome for the year to 31 August 2022 to be in line with the upgraded expectations which followed the third quarter trading update on 15 June 2022.
