The state has allocated nearly $3 billion for projects to improve transportation infrastructure throughout California, including more than $150 million for San Diego and Imperial counties.
The allocation, by the California Transportation Commission, includes more than $452 million in funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 and more than $123 million from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
“This allocation – which includes a significant federal investment – allows Caltrans and our local partners to continue building the equitable, sustainable and safe transportation system on which future generations will depend,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares.
Projects approved this week for the San Diego and border region include:
- $56 million to construct an auxiliary lane, mitigate highway settlement, install lighting, and other roadside safety improvements on State Route 52 between Convoy Street and Santo Road. The allocation includes $49.6 million in jobs act funds.
- $17.9 million to rehabilitate pavement by replacing concrete slabs and asphalt, along with work on culverts, bridge decks, guardrails and curb ramps, some of it to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards on State Route 54 from Interstate 5 to State Route 125. The allocation includes $15.8 million in jobs act funds.
- $42.8 million to rehabilitate roadway and culverts and upgrade facilities to ADA standards on SR-125 from Elkelton Place and State Route. This allocation includes $37.9 million in jobs act funds.
- $7.9 million to rehabilitate roadway and culverts and upgrade facilities to ADA standards on Interstate 805 from Main Street to Home Avenue. The allocation includes $7 million in jobs act funds.
- $2.4 million to modify the auxiliary lanes on SR-78 at Mission Road.
- $4.66 million to rehabilitate culverts, upgrade lighting, replace signs and upgrade facilities to ADA standards on Interstate 15 from Main Street to SR-52.
- $5.45 million to rehabilitate culverts and pavement, replace signs and upgrade facilities to ADA. The work includes SR-94 from I-5 to Millar Ranch Road I-805 north of Home Avenue.
- $4.6 million to pave slopes, add rumble strips and enhance highway worker safety at various locations on Interstate 8 and State Route 111 in El Centro. The Imperial County allocation includes $4.1 million in jobs act funds.
- $9.3 million to rehabilitate six bridges, including painting, deck and column work at various locations on I-8 and State Route 78 in El Centro. The Imperial County allocation includes $8.2 million in jobs act funds.
The commission allocated more than $2.1 billion to Caltrans’ Division of Local Assistance in its annual federal fiscal year investment.
Local assistance funds are used by more than 600 cities, counties and regional agencies throughout California to build and improve roads, bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure, and for projects that enhance safety and help protect the environment. Annually, more than 1,200 new projects are authorized through the program.
SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually that is shared equally between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of the funds.
