There is an argument to be made for ice cream, air conditioning and Netflix this hot hot hot San Diego weekend – you know, really chilling. But of course, you might have an urge to get out despite the heat. Let us help.
Learn more about the Native American experience through Sunday at the Barona Powwow in Lakeside. The Barona Band of Mission Indians hosts the free event at the Barona Sports Park with dancing, drumming and food and crafts too. There will be contests for all ages in several dance categories. The powwow opens at 6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. Saturday, with an early fun run, and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Rosin Box Project closes its 2022 season with four premiere ballets at the indoor/outdoor theater at Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park through Sunday. The program includes two world premieres by resident artists Katie Spagnolletti and Jeremy Zapanta. Tickets start at $45 with nightly shows starting at 7:30 p.m. A bonus – remember ice cream and A/C? – watch a virtual stream at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
It might be too hot for the beach – or is the sea too scary? It might be if you try to beat the heat by seeing the sharp-toothed thriller Jaws at the Fleet Science Center through Monday. The classic that made “Sharknado” possible will be on Imax screens twice a day Friday through Sunday and on Labor Day. Tickets cost $20.
If you’re going to sweat anyway, why not do it while making vino? The 25th Julian Grape Stomp Festa takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Menghini Winery. Stomp on those grapes to your hearts content, while contributing to future wines! Your reward? Sample wine and food too. Adult admission costs $20, and children get in for $7. Wine tastings cost $1.
Cool down in the evening at the R&B Block Party at the Quartyard in the East Village from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Groove to music from the ’70s to the present from DJs, with a guest performance at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $15.
Point Loma Playhouse hosts the free Summer Shakes’ 22, at Liberty Station, on Dewey Road between Rosecrans Street and Truxton Road at 3 p.m. Sunday. Watch the fruit of a six-week workshop for actors by the playhouse from the comfort of your lawn chair or blanket on the expansive lawn at Liberty Station.
Enjoy the scenery at Balboa Park’s Spreckels Organ Pavilion Sunday and Monday. Civic organist Raul Prieto Ramirez performs at 2 p.m. Sunday, while the Summer Organ Festival wraps up with the Organ Pavilion Rock Band Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The show features the best of lady rockers or groups fronted by women, such as Aretha Franklin, Jefferson Airplane, Blondie, Heart and Janis Joplin, tackled by local singers Chloe Lou and Lauren Leigh-Martin.
