Two people were gravely injured Tuesday in a fire that destroyed an Escondido home.

The blaze in the 400 block of West 11th Avenue erupted shortly before 5:30 p.m., Escondido Fire Department spokesman Jeff Murdock said.

Firefighters arrived to find the single-story house engulfed in flames, Murdock said. Informed that people might be trapped inside, firefighters entered and rescued the injured man and woman, Murdock said.

Paramedics took the victims to a hospital for treatment of severe burns and smoke inhalation.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to subdue the flames.

The cause of the fire, which left the home a “total loss,” was under investigation, Murdock said.
