Police have publicly identified a man arrested on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of a family member that preceded a standoff outside a Barrio Logan apartment.

The suspect was identified as Ramiro Cervantes, 45, who also was found to have an outstanding felony warrant.

The shooting happened Friday at an apartment in the 900 block of Sampson Street, according to Lt. Jud Campbell of the San Diego Police Department. Officers responded and summoned SWAT and negotiation teams.

They “heard at least one gunshot from inside the apartment while they were negotiating with the male,” Campbell said.

Though he at first refused to speak with officers, Cervantes eventually leaned out a window to communicate with negotiators. At approximately 11 p.m., he exited the apartment and surrendered without incident.

Officers entered the unit and found the victim, 33, who appeared to have traumatic injuries. A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department medic pronounced him dead.

Preliminary information indicated that Cervantes was the victim’s uncle and that they lived together at the apartment, police said. Campbell did not release the victim’s name in SDPD’s initial release.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
