Man, 27, Who Died in Serra Mesa Freeway Crash ID’d as Joseph Estrella

 Authorities Thursday publicly identified a man who died the day after his 27th birthday in a predawn Serra Mesa freeway crash following a night out with friends.

Joseph Estrella of San Diego was headed north on Interstate 15 at high speed shortly before 1 a.m. July 29 when the Toyota sedan he was driving veered to the right and struck a box truck with a flat tire parked on the eastern shoulder of the roadway north of Friars Road, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Estrella died at the scene of the accident.

The 25-year-old Spring Valley man who had been driving the truck was outside of it at the time of the crash and suffered minor injuries when it when was pushed into him due to the impact with the car, the California Highway Patrol reported.
