Today is the day for observing the federal holiday of Juneteenth (June 19th). As an official federal holiday it still remains new — having been approved last year by President Biden. But its history goes back much much further than that.
I frankly did not know about Juneteenth for a long time. I never learned about it in school. Growing up in an extremely white community, I did not see or experience it for myself.
So today, I want to elevate the voices of others who know much more about Juneteenth, and learn more about what a significant and meaningful day it is, and why it is important for all of us as a nation to recognize and honor it.
