On August 15, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that a Long Island chiropractor pleaded guilty to healthcare fraud for billing a private insurance company over $1 million for acupuncture services that were never performed. The investigation of Peter Adamczak was a joint effort by DOJ, the New York State Inspector General, and the New York Field Office of the FBI.
Adamczak’s scheme ran from 2016 to 2020. He was not licensed to perform acupuncture, but claimed that the services were rendered by an unaffiliated acupuncturist who leased office space from him. Neither the unidentified acupuncturist nor Adamczak actually provided the acupuncture services.
Based on Adamczak’s fraudulent claims, the unidentified insurance company paid nearly $1 million in reimbursements to its beneficiaries, most of whom then delivered the payments to Adamczak. The DOJ press release did not provide details of Adamczak’s likely prison sentence and financial forfeiture.
