Construction of a 200-acre transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley began with a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday attended by city officials and project executives.
The Riverwalk San Diego project is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk Golf Club into a neighborhood and restore the stretch of San Diego River that runs through it, according to Houston-based real estate developer Hines.
Phase one of construction will include 930 for-rent apartments spread across a series of five buildings along Friars Road, 75,000 square feet of retail space, as well as sidewalk and bike lane improvements, developers said.
“Riverwalk is truly a poster child for smart growth,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “When it comes to housing, mobility, natural resources, open space, environment, climate action — you can understand why the Mayor wants to be here today. This is a good day for San Diego.”
The project will have a planned 4,300 units of housing — of which 430 are designated income-qualified affordable housing. The plan also includes a new Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 1 million square feet of office space and 100 acres of parks, including a 60-acre regional park celebrating the San Diego River.
The completion and grand opening of Riverwalk San Diego’s phase one is slated for early 2025. Developers said the 18-hole Riverwalk Golf Course will remain open through phase one of construction.
