Two nonprofit organizations broke ground this week for a 145-unit affordable apartment complex less than half a mile from City Hall in National City.

The urban village-style Kimball Highland Apartments are being developed by Community HousingWorks in partnership with San Ysidro Health and the city.

“The Kimball Highland groundbreaking reinforces National City’s commitment to creating an age-friendly community by recognizing the unique needs that all walks of life may have,” said Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis.

She said the project will feature “quality housing and excellent services that address our diverse families and elders’ needs while respecting our National City community culture.”

The new apartments will rent for $660 per month to $2,300 per month for qualified individuals with annual earnings between $27,330 and $63,770. Floor plans include studios and apartments with 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms.

The project is adjacent to Community HousingWorks’ renovated Kimball Tower and Morgan Tower senior apartments, and near stores and the Blue Line trolley.

San Ysidro Health will open a 44,000-square-foot health center offering all-inclusive care for elderly patients on the property. The $50 million center will serve an estimated 20,000 National City residents annually.

Founded in 1988, Community HousingWorks is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that develops and operates affordable apartment communities throughout California. San Ysidro Health operates a network of clinics in San Diego County providing affordable medical and dental care.
