City Attorney Mara Elliott announced Monday that a crumbling single-room-occupancy hotel in downtown San Diego must be vacated due to dangerous code violations, fire hazards, and “deplorable living conditions.”
The six-story C Street Inn, located at 630-636 C St., was cited for mold and rodent infestations, lack of smoke and fire alarms, hallways blocked by trash, electrical hazards and other code violations.
“Dozens of people were living in dangerous conditions in this squalid century-old building,” Elliott said. “All the occupants will be relocated to safe and clean housing, and we will ensure the property owner is held accountable.”
The original 72 occupants of the hotel will each receive $4,720 in relocation costs, and the San Diego County Housing Commission will assist in finding new accommodations.
A hearing will be held to recover the funds from property owner Jax Properties LLC.
In addition to health and safety violations, inspectors determined the hotel constitutes a public nuisance. Records show that the San Diego Police Department has responded more than 190 times since May of 2019 to problems at the hotel.
