Simba leads the cast of beloved characters as The Lion King arrives Wednesday for its Broadway San Diego run.

The perennial favorite, a six-time Tony Award winner, including Best Musical, continues through Sept. 11 at the downtown San Diego Civic Theatre.

Darian Sanders stars as Simba for the North American tour, with Gerald Ramsey as his father Mufasa, Spencer Platchy as Scar and Kayla Cyphers as Nala. John E. Brady and Tony Freeman supply the comic relief as Pumbaa and Timon.

Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor bought the original Broadway production to life in 1997 after the success of Disney’s 1994 animated film classic. Elton John and Tim Rice contributed the music.

Tickets start at $25.50. Evening performances take place Tuesday through Sunday, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday.

The upcoming Broadway San Diego season includes Cats in September, the return of Hamilton, Annie and another Disney favorite, Frozen.
