American Tech Chooses Canada – LexBlog

More American tech workers and entrepreneurs are choosing to live and work in Canada. A 2020 study found the number of U.S. residents entering Canada through the skill-based immigration program Express Entry rose 75% between 2017 and 2019. Canada’s government is very vocal in stating that immigration is the key to Canada’s economic recovery:

Immigration is the greatest competitive advantage we have.

– Sean Fraser,
Minister of Immigration

The United States tech industry is suffering from a massive backlog and labor shortage, reports Axios:

    • Excruciatingly long waits for green cards means the U.S. loses out on tech talent, resulting in calls for fixes to the system from major companies like Microsoft and Google.
    • The U.S. has an annual limit of 85,000 H-1B visas per year, far too few for the number of applicants. Canada does not have a similar cap.

Despite backlogs caused by the pandemic, Canada’s Global Skills Strategy visa program is working toward returning to the pre-pandemic 2-week visa approval standard.

Sharp Increase in Americans Who Want to Move to Canada

At Ackah Business Immigration Law, we are seeing an increase in inquiries from Americans who want to move to Canada. In addition to the challenges for foreign talent to get a visa or green card to live and work in America, the U.S politics and economy are motivating more Americans to expat to Canada:

  • The ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade is causing more Americans to ponder their loss of freedom and liberty, and to look north to Canada for a similar culture but with more individual freedom.

Abortion has been legal in Canada since 1969 at all stages of pregnancy, regardless of the reason, and is publicly funded as a medical procedure by all provincial healthcare systems across the country.

  • Parents who are frightened by the Uvalde school massacre and the American gun culture are despairing after June’s Supreme Court gun-rights ruling. America has more guns than people — or 120 for every 100 persons — while Canada has 34.5 guns per 100 persons.

Canada banned military-style assault rifles 2 years ago, has plans to ban 1,500 types of military-style firearms and to offer a mandatory buyback program.
