Two San Diego County schools have been named National Blue Ribbon SchoolsHelix Charter High School in La Mesa and Westview High School in Torrey Highlands.

The designation rewards public and private elementary, middle and high schools that close achievement and opportunity gaps for students who move on to achieve high learning standards.

“I applaud all the honorees for the 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award for creating vibrant, welcoming, and affirming school communities where students can learn, grow, reach their potential and achieve their dreams,” said Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

California schools hold 29 of the 297 spots among the 2022 Blue Ribbon schools, which were revealed Sept. 16.

In announcing the awards, California State Superintendent of Instruction Tony Thurmond said, “As we continue to recover from the pandemic, this award validates the hard work of educators across the state on behalf of our students. Their commitment to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of all their students has helped transform the lives of students during extraordinary circumstances.”

At one time, Helix placed in the bottom third of schools in the Grossmont Union High School District, officials said following the announcement. They credited converting to a charter school and implementing a 4×4 block schedule as two reasons for Helix’s achievement.

“Our success as a charter school stems from our commitment to effective collaboration, innovation and holding ourselves accountable to improving student outcomes for all students,” officials said in a release.

Westview High is part of the Poway Unified School District.
